Teaching music- is it as easy as what all of us think it is?
Here's a scenario, a student and a teacher. The student plays a piece and then the teacher corrects which notes are wrongly played. And then the student learns a new piece where the teacher teaches note by note. And that's it, we call it a lesson.
Is this the new trend of teaching music? The trend where music turns into business and no longer the passion of teaching music to the youngsters? It's all about money, for RM 80 a beginner students get a 45 minutes practical per lesson. If you pay RM 60, the beginner only get 40 minutes practical per lesson.
Oh My GOd... I couldn't imagine what has these people turns music into. Yeah, I cannot deny that music tutor can earn a very good income, but for the least give back what the student had paid for. Coming to a lesson and just learning pieces by pieces doesn't teaches the students the beauty of music nor the correct interpretation of music. What do they learn? Read notes by notes and played them. What will they turn into? Definitely not worth of the mounds of gold the parents invested in music lessons; they turn into robots who plays only what they see. The music tutors all become millionare by earning so much for doing such a easy job.
It is just so sad... What this world had become. The most beautiful thing - music- is being tarnished by business, business and business! I didn't say we shouldn't charge for music lessons which, of course, music tutors need to earn a living too. But, music teachers should learn to be more flexible and not so money-orientated when they come to teaching music.
It is so rare to find a music student who plays and hears what they themselves are playing. We rarely see a enthusiated student going for music lesson anymore; most children are half-forced by their parents to go for music lessons.
Another scenario, a eight-years old kid coming for a piano class. The mother "Quick, go in and learn now! The teacher is ready for you. Don't waste the time anymore. Mummy paid for every minute you wasted!". The kid "I don't like music! I want to go home!". And the mother says again "YOU Must Go in now, or i will ground you for one month! I just paid for your lesson fee and don't you dare to talk back at me!".
Gosh, parents have to understand too that in these circumstances both the kid and teacher will be unhappy throughout the lesson. The kid will most probaby become angry and refused to learn although they reluctantly attends the classes. The teacher will have one hell of a time trying to teach the kid how to play the piano. In the end, the money is wasted, the kid is unhappy and the teacher felt guilty for not carrying out her responsibility to teach the kid.
Huh... the world is going 'terbalik'...
